Formed in 1972, the Universities Safety Association (USA) timed its introduction with the most significant legislative change in UK workplace health and safety. Lord Robens’ Committee report was giving rise to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Already an information exchange, USA assisted the sector’s transition to the new approach. It built on this, striving for continuous improvement through collaborative working within and external to the sector.
In 2002 ‘Health’ was incorporated into the association’s name. This reflected: health and safety as integrated not separate strands; both as key enablers in delivering a successful and sustainable sector; and ensure both influence future strategies. 2015 saw the incorporation of USHA as a Company Limited by Guarantee
