The Fit Note Is Here

A new medical statement informally known as the ‘Fit Note’ was introduced in April 2010 to replace what was previously known as the ‘Sick Note’.

One of the key aims of the Fit Note is to facilitate a return to work following a period of sickness absence, as it requires the GP to consider whether the patient may be fit for some work based on an assessment of their condition, and support from the employer.

In other words it focuses on what an employee can do rather than what they can’t do.

Evidence shows that work is generally good for an employee’s health and that often going back to work can actually aid a person’s recovery. On the other hand, staying off work can lead to long-term absence and potential job loss with the risk of isolation, loss of confidence, mental health issues, de-skilling and social exclusion.

UCEA held a seminar on the implementation of the Fit Note on 15 June 2010. The key note address was given by Dame Carol Black who explained the background to the Fit Note, and presented a strong case for actively encouraging employees to return to work.

Different aspects of the Fit Note’s introduction were discussed by a wide range of speakers, including the legal implications, occupational health issues, and the GP’s perspective.

The seminar included an interesting case study on the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s Fit for Work Service.
